Needle Making
Without a good needle, tetrad dissection and other techniques in yeast micromanipulation are at the least difficult and at most, impossible. Needle making is a time consuming, hit-and-miss procedure and researchers protect their good needles as they would their children! Many a would-be dissector has been put off by the rigors of needle making and many a lab friendsip has been strained by needle sharing!

Singer Instruments are unique in offering factory made glass dissecting needles. They come in packs of 10 and comprise a specially cleaved fibre core, bonded into a supporting glass envelope. the needles are long enough to reach the thinnest agar and the unique construction gives the perfect combination of strength with flexibility that gives them very long life in normal use. They work with S. cerevisiae, S. pombe and other yeasts. |
Construction
The light-transmitting fibre core (50 μm ø) is supported by a thicker, taper ended glass envelope. The purpose designed cylindrical envelope gives rigidity to the needle, permits easy handling and placement in the holder. Both ends of the fibre are specially cleaved to allow maximum light transmission. Complete tetrads, spores and the like (and any contamination) is clearly seen on the needle tip. Our needles are all made to a very high standard and work well every time.

Needle holders are injection moulded clear plastic to allow light transmission.
The standard shaft diameter (for use with the Singer MSM and Singer MSM Manual) is 5mm (3/16'').
We also supply a small diameter holder with a 3mm (1/8') shaft for use in other micromanipulators. If in doubt, please check with us to find out if Singer Needles and holders are suitable for your micromanipulator.
The shaft of our needle holder is 270mm long and may be cut to length if necessary for use with other dissection scopes.
